What do we know about the importance of industrial productivity to a country's standards of living, both in absolute terms and relative to agricultural productivity, to improvements in capital intensity and to improvements in schooling? What do we know about the sources of industrial productivity growth, especially in the developing world? Drawing on evidence from India, China, and Mexico, Chang-Tai Hsieh delivers the second policy lecture of Growth Week 2010. He is joined in discussion by a distinguished panel.

Rasheed Adegbenro is Director of Corporate Affairs at the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

Chang-Tai Hsieh is Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a member of the Steering Group of the International Growth Centre.

John Page is Senior Fellow, Global Economy and Development, Brookings Institution, and Tanzania and Ethiopia Country Director at the International Growth Centre.

Ludovico Alcorta is Director of Development Policy at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

Haroon Bhorat is Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town.

This public lecture is part of Growth Week 2010, a three-day conference organised by the International Growth Centre (IGC). The previous public event takes place on 20 September at 6.30pm and is entitled Mobile phones and Development. The next event entitled Industrial Revolution or Agricultural Revolution? takes place on 21 September at 6.30pm.
