We need to bring the penal state back to the centre of the sociology of social inequality, public policy, and citizenship.

Loïc Wacquant is professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley and Centre de Sociologie Européenne, Paris. Nicola Lacey is a professor of criminal law at LSE.
