Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why it Matters for Global Capitalism

Financial Markets Group public lecture

Date: Wednesday 20 May 2009
Time: 12.30-2pm
Venue: Old Theatre, Old Building
Speaker: Professor Robert J. Shiller
Chair: Professor David Webb

The global financial crisis has made it painfully clear that powerful psychological forces are imperiling the wealth of nations today. From blind faith in ever-rising housing prices to plummeting confidence in capital markets, "animal spirits" are driving financial events worldwide. Robert Shiller will put forward a bold new vision that will transform economics and restore prosperity.

Robert J. Shiller is the Arthur M. Okun Professor of Economics, Department of Economics and Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics, Yale University, and Professor of Finance and Fellow at the International Center for Finance, Yale School of Management. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1967 and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. He has written on financial markets, financial innovation, behavioural economics, macroeconomics, real estate, statistical methods, and on public attitudes, opinions, and moral judgments regarding markets.

This event celebrates the publication of his latest book: Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why it Matters for Global Capitalism co-authored with Professor George A. Akerlof.  Professor Shiller will be available from 12-12:20pm to sign copies of his book which can be purchased from a stand outside the Old Theatre.

This event is free and open to all with no ticket required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis. For more information, email l.gibbon@lse.ac.uk or phone 020 7955 6301.
