LSE Public Lecture

Date: Tuesday 2 October 2007
Time: 6.30-8pm
Venue: Old Theatre, Old Building
Speaker: Professor Bjørn Lomborg
Discussant: Dr Simon Dietz
Chair: Professor Gwyn Prins

Current policy proposals on global warming tend to focus on early and strong greenhouse gas cuts, although these will be very expensive and help very little. Lomborg suggests that we should focus on long-term, smart strategies.

Bjørn Lomborg is director of the Copenhagen Consensus Centre at Copenhagen Business School. Lomborg was named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2004. He is the author of the bestselling The Skeptical Environmentalist (CUP, 2001) which sold 23,000 copies in the UK.

Simon Dietz is Lecturer in Environmental Policy in the Department of Geography and Environment and Centre for Environmental Policy and Governance, and Visiting Fellow at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. From 2005-2006 he was an economic adviser on the Stern Review. Simon holds a starred first class honours degree in Environmental Science from the University of East Anglia, and Masters and PhD degrees from the LSE, specialising in environmental policy and economics. His main research interests are in climate-change economics and policy, equity/social justice issues in environmental policy, and sustainable development.

This event marks the launch of Bjørn Lomborg's new book Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist's Guide to Global Warming (Cyan-Marshall Cavendish October 2007).
