Unfortunately the speaker at this event has withdrawn due to unforseen circumstances. LSE apologises for any inconvenience caused but is pleased to announce that a new event has been organised. The new speaker is Professor Archie Brown who will speak on the topic of Gorbachev and the end of the Cold war. The event is entitled Seven Years That Shook the World: Gorbachev and the end of the cold war|
This lecture will argue that the Cold War was fundamentally an ideological struggle which began with the Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War and ended when Mikhail Gorbachev abandoned the Marxist theory of the international class struggle and allowed the countries of Eastern Europe to liberate themselves. It will trace the events that brought an end to the Cold War and consider whether the successful Cold War diplomacy provides any lessons for diplomacy in the much changed but very dangerous international environment today.
Jack Matlock is a former United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia.
This lecture is part of the Cold War Studies Centre 'From the Cold War to the New World Order' lecture series.
The next event in this series will be held on Thursday 9 November. Andrei Grachev will present a lecture entitled 'The Collapse of the Soviet Empire: reflections of an insider|'.
This event is free and open to all with no ticket required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis.
