Professor Michael Newman will introduce this panel debate to celebrate the launch of his new publication Ralph Miliband and the Politics of the New Left (Merlin Press). Ralph Miliband is a key 20th century political thinker, whose work was devoted to the attempt to define and apply an independent form of socialism.
Michael Newman is a professor of politics and Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration Studies at London Metropolitan University. Tony Benn, the longest serving Labour MP in the history of the party, was recently visiting professor at LSE; Anthony Giddens is director of LSE and the most widely read and cited social theorist of his generation; Leo Panitch is Distinguished Research Professor and Senior Canada Research Chair at York University, Canada; Hilary Wainwright is a senior research fellow at the Centre for Labour Studies, University of Manchester, and editor of Red Pepper, UK.
All tickets for this event have now gone. A returns queue will be in operation on the night (30 minutes before the event begins) with any empty seats being filled with people from the returns queue just before the event begins.
There will also be a live videolink to the New Theatre, East Building which will open 30 minutes before the event begins. Entry to this videolink venue will be on a first come, first serve basis.
