• LSE Research Magazine

This week, LSE published the second issue of LSE Research, a magazine showcasing the School’s celebrated research across the social sciences.

Two great tectonic plates are on the move - China and the US - and the rest of the world is struggling to adjust to new realities and new relationships. This historic power shift, its repercussions, and indeed the myths surrounding it are the cover subjects of the Autumn 2010 issue, which brings together four of LSE's most eminent thinkers on the subject: Arne Westad, Michael Cox, Danny Quah and Niall Ferguson.

Additionally, in a special report, Justin Gest, Mina Al-Lami and Kristian Coates Ulrichsen bring us some disturbing news from the front lines of what used to be called the war on terror.

The magazine can be viewed online here.

• LSE student raising money for volunteering project in Peru

Undergraduate student Yisum Heneghan will be taking part in a ten week volunteering project in Peru departing in October, and is seeking donations for the assignment.

The project is run by Platform2, a programme organised by the Department for International Development, alongside BUNAC and Christian Aid, and will involve Yisum working in a community called Pachacutec, located on the outskirts of Lima.

The project’s main activity is to improve a community nursery school so that children in the district can develop and learn in safe and healthy surroundings. Yisum will also be helping people to develop their English language skills and improving their environment.

Yisum is seeking sponsorship during the project, so that she can help to raise awareness and further aid for the community. All remaining proceeds will go to Christian Aid.

  LSESU Business Society

• LSESU Business Society

Founded in 1996, the LSESU Business Society is the first careers society to be founded on campus. Over the years, we have developed into the largest and best-established society at LSE.

The society’s primary objective is to function as an interface between the corporate world and LSE’s high-reaching students. We provide our members with a clear understanding of the current corporate environment and ensure they become aware of all the opportunities available to them.

Claim to fame?

Voted 'Best Society 2006-07', we are widely recognised as the most active, professional and successful student society on campus.

Number of members?

The LSESU Business Society boasts a membership of over 2,500 members.

Society president?

Gerald Ang
w.j.ang@lse.ac.uk

Big event coming up that you would like to highlight?

This year, the society has several new sponsors. We will be hosting a series of events and members can be prepared to receive new ideas and perspective. Members can also participate in our newly introduced 'law and reinsurance' events as part of our thematic series.

Why should people join the society?

Through a series of events, our members will be able to obtain a better understanding and perspective of the different areas of the financial industry. Thematic series further our members' understanding of the different divisions in the banking industry and thus help them make more-informed decisions about career aspirations.

Our events also provide a networking platform. Networking events provide a unique opportunity for firms to meet our ambitious members in an informal setting.

- 60 Second Interview

    Charlie Beckett

• with..... Charlie Beckett

I'm the director of POLIS, the Media and Communications Department's journalism and society think-tank. I'm a south London born journalist living in north London with two Camden students and a west London international charity director, supporting East London's foremost football team. I'm passionate about media change and journalism's part in local and global politics.

If you were marooned on a desert island, which LSE department/centre/division/student society would you find most useful to have with you?

Apart from catering or travel, I would have to say Philosophy - time to think.

Name a company you would like to own and run and explain why?

Apple because it would save me a fortune not having to pay for their products.

What would you save from a fire?

A cat called Loki and my signed West Ham shirt.

What was the first news story you remember really catching your attention?

The Moon landing and then the 1974 election. The first I covered was the BNP marching in Leicester.

If you met the UK prime minister and could ask him only one question, what would it be?

When did you first consciously want to be Prime Minister?

What are your hobbies?

Running and swimming on Hampstead Heath all year around, playing football badly and watching West Ham play badly, galleries, museums, walking, and reading history.
