• LSE students join world leaders to propose global economic and
financial reforms
A group of staff and students from LSE are participating in an
international conference together with world leaders and Nobel Prize
winners to propose global economic, financial and political reforms.
The New World, New Capitalism symposium in Paris, which began last
week, will also examine the progress made so far in tackling the global
economic disaster. As an academic partner in the conference, LSE has sent 30
graduate students from a variety of subject areas, along with Maurice
Fraser, senior fellow in European politics, and Razeen Sally, senior
lecturer in international political economy.
Mohammad Vesal, a PhD economics student, presented a summary of one of
the student roundtable discussions.
He said: ‘The topic was whether we should change our view of the world and
we discussed whether we should change our values, related to the idea of
global governance. The conference was very useful. It gave an interesting insight into how
policy is formed.’

• Photo Prize Exhibition 2010 - last chance reminder
The deadline is almost upon us, but there is just enough time for you to
submit your photos if you have not already done so. If you would like your
photos to be considered, they must be received by LSE Arts by 5pm this
Friday (15 January).
The theme of the competition is ‘risk’, and it is open to all LSE staff
and students. Selected entries will be professionally printed, mounted and
exhibited in LSE’s Atrium Gallery in the Old Building during March - April
2010.
As well as the selected photos, prizes will be awarded for the best
photos at a reception in the Atrium Gallery once the exhibition is
installed. Last year’s exhibition attracted some excellent entries and the
exhibition and reception were well attended by staff and students, as well
as members of the public. Don’t miss this great opportunity to participate
in the arts programmes within the school, and to showcase your artistic
talents.
For more information on how to submit your photos, click

Questions
to the School

|
|
This is your opportunity to put your questions to the School - perhaps
you want to know more about the new Student Services Centre, the Careers
Service, the Library or even the catering facilities. Or maybe you just
have suggestions on how to improve your time here?
Q: Is the School considering creating any additional music
practice rooms in any future building developments?
Question raised by a student at the 'Meet the Managers' session
last term
A: Bespoke music practice rooms have not been included in the
design of the New Student Centre as they were not a requirement of the
agreed brief. However, we are looking at other options and have asked the
Project Team to identify any spaces in the new building which would be
capable of being used for this function.
Julian Robinson, Director of Estates

• Albanian Society
Awarded 'Best Overall Society' for 2007-08, the LSESU Albanian Society is
a campus based society established in 2005 to promote a better understanding
of Albanian culture, tradition, history and current affairs.
Famous alum?
Alfred Kovaci - Albanian society President from 2007-09 - not only
transformed the Albanian Society so that it won the ‘Best Overall
Society’ prize in LSE, he also demonstrated his wish to transform the
LSE Student Union as a whole too, when in 2009 he made an election run for
the highest position in the LSE Students’ Union, that of the Secretary
General of the Union.
Achievements?
Apart from the huge parties with live music and useful networking
receptions, the society organised high profile public lectures with the
president of Kosovo, Dr Sejdiu; speaker of Albanian Parliament, Mrs Jozefina
Topalli; foreign minister of Albania, Lulzim Basha; Kosovo’s minister of
economy and finance, Dr Shala; former PM of Albania, Ilir Meta; ambassadors
to London, Mazi and Hamiti - respectively of Albania and Kosovo; business
leaders and academics; while establishing close collaborations with
prestigious establishments such as the LSE European Institute and the LSE
Social Policy Department to name just a few. And of course, the ultimate achievement
for the society came when it was crowned as the ‘Best Overall
Society’ at LSE in 2008.
Society president?
Anisa Berdellima
su.soc.albanian@lse.ac.uk
Why should people join this society?
To get involved and enjoy great events, and to learn more about the last
secret beauties of Europe.

• with..... Alan Revel
Alan is Events Manager at LSE and
has worked at the School since 2000.
Alan has recently starred in a
'Stories from LSE' film which
provides a taster of the exciting
events programme that he and his
team organise and which has brought
luminaries such as Nelson Mandela,
Chancellor Angela Merkel, Alan
Greenspan, George Soros and
President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia
to LSE. To watch the film, click
here.
Where is your favourite place
on the LSE campus and why?
The eighth floor of the NAB, it
has great views of London.
What are you most afraid of?
Heights
With which famous person would
you most like to have dinner and why?
Don Bradman, because I love
cricket.
What is your most treasured
possession?
A DVD of England winning the
Ashes in 2005, perhaps that will be
replaced by the new DVD of them
winning them this year.
What are the best and worst
presents you have ever received?
A personalised calendar, which
had pictures of my family and
friends on their birthdays. It was
really nice, and meant that for one
year I actually remembered to send
birthday/anniversary cards.
The worst present was a jar of
marmite, which I got this last year,
and which I hate.
What would you do if you were
LSE director for a day?
Visit the LSE alumni in
Mauritius. |
