The Centre's Order Project will host lectures by Geoffrey Hodgson (Hertfordshire) on 'What are Institutions?', Monday, 14 May, 5:30pm, CON.1.06 and Garry Runciman (Cambridge) on 'The Surprising Coherence of Human Institutions', Monday, 21 May, 11am-1pm, LAK.2.06.

 

Joshua Cohen (Stanford) will give the 2012 Auguste Comte Memorial Lectures on 'Mobile for Development Meets Human-Centred Design' and 'Mobile for Development - Global Justice', Tuesday, 15 May and Wednesday, 16 May, 6:30-8pm, Old Theatre, Old Building.

 

The Department of Philosophy and the Forum for European Philosophy will co-host an international conference on 'The Politics of Secession in the European Union' on Tuesday, 22 May, 10am-6:30pm, Room 349, Senate House.

 

The Centre presents Quentin Skinner (Queen Mary, UCL) on ‘Philosophically Speaking about Freedom’ on Thursday, 24 May, 6:30-8pm, New Theatre, East Building.

 

The Choice Group will host a book launch event for Eric Schokkaert (KUL) and Wulf Gaertner's (Osnabrueck and LSE) Empirical Social Choice as part of the 'Belgian Salon' series at the Belgian Embassy. Wednesday, 30 May, 5:30pm.

 

David Wallace (Oxford) will give a Sigma Club talk on 'And yet, it works: Lessons for Foundations from Mainstream Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics' on Monday 25 June, 5-7pm, LAK.2.06.

 

News

The Department is pleased to welcome a new lecturer, Dr Gabriel Wollner, and two new LSE Fellows, Dr Joseph Mazor and Emily McTernan, who will be taking up their positions during the coming academic year.

 

John Worrall participated in BBC radio discussions of philosophy and the scientific method (podcast here) and of the significance of Nassim Nicholas Taleb and his book The Black Swan (podcast here).

 

Colin Howson has a new book, Objecting to God, published by Cambridge University Press.

 

Nancy Cartwright will give the 2012 Pufendorf Lectures in Lund in May.
