LSE held its fifth LSE China Conference and 13th annual LSE-Peking University Summer School in Beijing this month, with close to 400 people attending the event on the 16 August and 265 students from 50 countries and territories being taught by academics from LSE and PKU between 8-19 August.
The LSE China Conference featured keynote addresses from Ms Chen Lifang, Corporate Senior Vice President and Director of the Board of Huawei, on Cultivating Global Talent, and China's preeminent economist Professor Zhang Weiying (pictured above), who spoke and led an engaging discussion on the question Is China's Economic Growth Sustainable without Essential Political Reform?
LSE finance academic, Dr Moqi Xu chaired the panel on Chinese Financial Services and Global Markets, while Dr Fei Qin of the LSE Department of Management delivered this year's section Spotlight on LSE Research, discussing the impact on business from her latest research findings on talent mobility and entrepreneurship.
Professor Paul Kelly, LSE Pro-Director for Teaching and Learning, hosted the conference and remarked "this was our largest conference to date and it is testament to the quality of the speakers, both from LSE and within China. The annual conference is an important platform for LSE to engage with our partners in China, to bring together friends, alumni and supporters of the School, along with members of the general public in China and the region, to discuss important national and global issues".
August has been a busy month for LSE in China, with the School's 13th annual LSE-Peking University Summer School held in Beijing from 8-19 August.LSE academics, Judith Schapiro (Economics), Mick Cox (International Relations), Yao Qiwei (Statistics), Timothy Hildebrandt (Social Policy), Xu Moqi (Finance), Mayling Birney (International Development), Hyun Shin (Geography & Environment), and Fei Qin (Management) taught with PKU colleagues on 12 courses with 265 students enrolled from 50 countries and territories.
LSE academics also attended the 7th LSE Graduation Ceremony in Beijing on 16 August,, with new graduands receiving their degrees from Professor Paul Kelly. LSE China Careers Fairs, now in their 11th year, were also a success, providing opportunities for recent LSE alumni and graduates to meet with potential employers from a broad range of industry sectors. The fairs have been held in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong since 2006. This year also saw the addition of a Careers Forum in Singapore.
