A specialist unit dedicated to promoting and understanding entrepreneurship’s potential as a powerful force for driving change around the globe has been launched by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Through courses, public lectures, debates and networking events, LSE Entrepreneurship will foster discussions around entrepreneurial activity and its impact on individuals, societies and economies, as well as enterprises.
LSE Entrepreneurship’s flagship course, Entrepreneurship Matters, begins in November 2014, and will be offered to LSE students as a supplementary course to their core degree studies. Each session will be led by a speaker with a different entrepreneurial expertise to provide students with a wide range of perspectives on entrepreneurship, helping foster their capabilities for entrepreneurial thinking and action. Speakers include Pamela Hartigan, Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford University, Lance Uggla, CEO of Markit, and Mthuli Ncube, Chief Economist of the African Development Bank.
Professor Alnoor Bhimani, Director of LSE Entrepreneurship, said, "We live in an age of entrepreneurship: the biggest innovations come from the smallest of enterprises and sustainable solutions to social inequalities are being sparked by entrepreneurial intelligence. Our new unit will explore entrepreneurial thinking to help students develop, in true LSE fashion, an understanding of what is one of the greatest forces of change today.”
LSE Director and President Craig Calhoun, who spoke at the LSE Entrepreneurship launch, said, “LSE Entrepreneurship’s agenda is very much connected to the School’s long-term agenda of understanding social change and exploring how social sciences can contribute to these big discussions. As more students choose careers that involve self-employment and starting their own businesses, an offering that develops their entrepreneurial thinking abilities and understanding is a valuable addition to the School.”
The launch was also attended by LSE alumnus Erich Spangenberg, whose family foundation supports LSE Entrepreneurship. He spoke on the topic ‘Getting Started’, explaining his own journey from LSE MSc student in 1982 to successful investor and entrepreneur.
