'Thanks a hundred million' says LSE to generous supporters

The London School of Economics and Political Science has raised £100 million after completing one of the largest fund-raising campaigns ever set by a UK university.

The Campaign for LSE received donations from more than 90 countries across the world and included 22 gifts of £1 million or more. In total there were more than 12,000 donors, of whom 10,300 were former students.

Since the campaign began, LSE has provided philanthropic scholarship support to over 600 students from across the globe. Funds have also helped pay for better facilities, including the new eight-storey building between Lincoln's Inn Fields and Kingsway in central London which the School will open later this year.

The campaign has also grown LSE's endowment by £14 million and established new research in areas including human rights, climate change and contemporary Turkish studies.

Fund-raising is essential at LSE as teaching and research grants from central government make up only 17 per cent of the school's annual income.

As part of the campaign the LSE has increased its international philanthropic profile, with an office in New York and staff working in Asia.

LSE Director Howard Davies said: 'The impact of the Campaign for LSE has been felt all over the School. LSE has been one of the leaders in higher education fundraising. We set out an ambitious target early on and we are now announcing the success of that target, so I think we have been one of those universities that have shown what philanthropic support can achieve.

'We would like to thank everyone who gave so generously and those who worked so hard on the campaign. But our fundraising ambitions are by no means fulfilled. With the help of the government's new matching scheme we hope to raise even more money in future.'
