Legal firm Herbert Smith to sponsor Law and Financial Markets Project at LSE

Leading international legal practice Herbert Smith will become the first Foundation Sponsor of the LSE Law and Financial Markets Project (LFMP), LSE announced this week (Monday 2 July). This Project carries out research into how law and regulation serve and interact with, financial market activity. It aims to provide a framework for collaboration between lawyers in the commercial world and those in academic institutions.

The director of the Project is Roger McCormick, a visiting professor and senior research fellow at LSE, who was also formerly a partner in a major City law firm.

As a Foundation Sponsor of the LFMP, Herbert Smith will support the project initially over a three year period.

Roger McCormick said: 'We are delighted to welcome Herbert Smith as our first Foundation Sponsor for the LFMP. We have been working with them for some time on a very successful collaborative programme on Principles Based Regulation and look forward to extending the relationship. Financial services are now a major contributor to the UK economy and it is vital that the legal infrastructure for this activity is kept up to date and in prime condition. All lawyers, practitioners and academics, have a part to play in this and, through the LFMP, we believe we are helping to keep the contacts and information flows between the academic side and the practitioner side as open and productive as they should be.'

Martyn Hopper, head of Herbert Smith's financial services regulation practice, said: 'Herbert Smith is committed to supporting the very best in legal academic endeavour, particularly where we can bring expertise to bear from our own market experience. By combining practical and academic perspectives, and the intellectual excellence, from the Law Faculty at the LSE and our own professional specialists at Herbert Smith, we believe there is a real opportunity to bring some new ideas and thinking to this burgeoning area. We look forward to broadening and deepening our relationship with the Law Faculty over the coming years.'
