Professor Timothy Besley appointed a member of the Monetary Policy Committee

Timothy Besley, professor of economics and political science and director of STICERD at LSE, has been appointed a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). He will join the MPC in September of this year.

Professor Besley is also a research fellow of the Institute for Fiscal Studies and last year won the Yrjo Jahnsson award for European economics. He joins former LSE economics professors Mervyn King, Charles Bean, Charles Goodhart and Steve Nickell who have also served on the MPC.

John Van Reenen, director of the Centre for Economics Performance at the LSE, said: 'Tim is one of the most brilliant economists living and working in the UK with a unique set of skills ranging across theory, applied analysis and policy advice.'
