The European Union and the Challenge of Globalisation

Prime minister of Finland to speak at LSE

Matti Vanhanen, prime minister of Finland, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, will give a public lecture at LSE on Thursday 5 October. He will explore the EU in relation to the challenge of globalisation.

This event is part of 'The Future of Europe Series', hosted jointly by FT Business and the LSE European Institute. Other speaks in the series will include Italian president Giorgio Napolitano|, Professor Timothy Garton Ash, University of Oxford, Professor Willem Buiter, chair in European political economy at LSE, Dr Costas Karamanlis, prime minister of Greece and Peter Sutherland is chairman of BP and president of the Federal Trust.

Matti Vanhanen is prime minister of Finland. Prior to this served as defence minister and he has been a member of the Finnish Parliament since 1991. Finland currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Professor Kevin Featherstone, director of LSE's European Institute, will chair this event.

The European Union and the Challenge of Globalisation is on Thursday 5 October 2006 at 6.30pm in the Old Theatre, Old Building, LSE, Houghton Street, London WC2A. Constitution must not form new condition for enlargement -Finnish PM at LSE (6 Oct 06)
Matti Vanhanen, the prime minister of Finland, said that the EU's draft constitutional treaty must not become a new condition for the future enlargement of the union, in a lecture he gave at the London School of Economics and Political Science on Thursday.

Tony Blair met his Finnish counterpart in Number 10 for talks ahead of an informal summit of European leaders later this month. Finland currently have presidency of the EU and Matti Vanhanen and Mr Blair covered a wide range of issues during their Downing Street discussions. While in London, Prime Minister Vanhanen will deliver a lecture on the challenges of globalisation at the London School of Economics.
