Romano Prodi, president of the European Commission, spoke at LSE on Monday 19 January on Europe: added value, changing quickly.
Prodi, who leaves office October this year after a five year tenure, looked at the changes Europe has gone through during his tenure as president. He spoke on the problems faced economically and politically with developing the EU and the challenges it still faces in drafting a Constitution acceptable to all.
Prodi concluded by saying: 'Europe is the best answer to the new challenges of globalisation, bringing added value where it is most needed while respecting the diversity and traditions of each of its members. These are major successes...which make Europe a unique model in the world. But this is not enough to face the new challenges ahead of us. We need a new Constitution that will give the Union the necessary means and instruments to pursue its policies in a new, globalised world.'
