Risk and Society - Is Science Dangerous?

Imperial College and LSE launched a joint public lecture series on Monday 11 March to herald their formal collaboration in a number of areas.

Science and Society will feature four public debates during 2002 designed to get to the heart of issues concerned with the social impact of science and technology.

Photograph of Professor Lewis WolpertThe first tackled the issue of Risk and Society: is science dangerous? More than 300 people heard keynote speaker Professor Lewis Wolpert, of University College, London, (pictured) argue that science itself was value-free and objective but that science and technology - how science was applied - were two different things.

A team of distinguished panellists discussed this theme. Professor Rod Smith, of Imperial College, Dr David Jefferys of the Medical Devices Agency, and Professor John Adams, of University College, also highlighted risk-benefit, scientific regulation and public understanding of science issues before taking questions from the audience. LSE's Director Professor Anthony Giddens was in the chair.

The second of these free public lectures, Who Says Our Food is Safe?,  takes place on Monday 29 April at LSE, with the remaining lectures to be held in the autumn term. Professor Roy Anderson, Imperial College, will be giving the keynote lecture.
