Research Officer
Dr Valeria Cetorelli is Research Officer at the LSE Middle East Centre. Her research revolves around the political and social determinants of population health. Her PhD thesis, entitled 'Demographic and Health Effects of the 2003-2011 War in Iraq', examined some of the overlooked consequences of the Iraq War on early marriage, fertility, and newborn health.
Valeria has worked as a research consultant for UNFPA, and has obtained research grants from the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy. She has also been awarded various research prizes, including a Richard Titmuss Prize, a British Society for Population Studies Award and an Emirates Foundation Award.
Currently, she is working on a large-scale mortality and health survey among households displaced by the Islamic State into the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The survey is a collaboration project between LSE, Hawler Medical University, University of Duhok, and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
