The emerging political developments in the MENA region might well result in either the advancement of women’s rights and roles in a more democratic society or in back-sliding and regression as new social players and ideologies come to the fore. There is no question however that social debate regarding gender issues and the economic empowerment of women will be occurring at a heightened scale over the next few years. Enlightening these debates with evidence-based research is of crucial importance, as is an area with glaring knowledge gaps.
To address this deficiency, the Economic Research Forum has invited submissions of proposals under the theme of Female Economic Empowerment in the MENA region. The Middle East Centre will be hosting a workshop in which the lead researchers of the seven selected proposals will present the progress of their work and engage in inter-disciplinary and inter-regional discussion on this research area.
