Dr David Lesch, an expert on Syria who has met on a regular basis with Syrian President Bashar al-Asad since 2004, will discuss the oftentimes confrontational relationship between Syria and the United States during the Syrian president's time in power, one that also offered tantalizing hopes for more a more cooperative relationship that could lay the foundation for an overall Arab-Israeli peace.
David W. Lesch is Professor of Middle East History in the Department of History and Coordinator of the Middle East Concentration in the International Studies Program at Trinity University in San Antonio. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. (1991) in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University. Among his publications are the following books: The New Lion of Damascus: Bashar al-Asad and Modern Syria (Yale University Press, 2005); Syria and the United States: Eisenhower's Cold War in the Middle East (Westview Press, 1992),
