In brief

Germany belongs to those countries in which parents care a good deal about potentially negative consequences of their children using the internet. They overestimate the likelihood of negative experiences. As a consequence they fail to encourage their children to develop their online skills and to explore the opportunities provided by the internet.

Highlights

The findings on Germany have informed the policy development, guidance and the initiatives of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the German regulatory authorities and the regional states.
EU Kids Online findings have been published in the most relevant German journals for media use (“Media Perspektiven”), for child and youth protection (“Kinder- und Jugendschutz in Wissenschaft und Praxis”), for political education (“Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte”), and for research on children and youth (“Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung”).
Based on EU Kids Online evidence and other work on youth protection, media literacy, and media education, the German team is currently running a two-year project on youth protection and media education that has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry. The project includes a) qualitative research on the consequences of mobile internet use and on technical filtering, b) a European conference “Net Youngsters 2020” in April 2015, and c) monitoring of national and international developments in the field.
After the end of the third project phase of the EU Kids Online network (2012-2014), the German team at the Hans Bredow Institute will take over the network coordination.

German team

Professor Dr Uwe Hasebrink is the Director of the Hans Bredow Institute and Professor for Empirical Communication Research at the University of Hamburg. His main research interests are audience and reception research and European media and public spheres. He has been a member of the Executive Board of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) since 2004.

Dr Claudia Lampert is a senior researcher at the Hans Bredow Institute with research interests in media socialisation, media education and media literacy. She is currently working on the role of digital media in the everyday lives of children and adolescents. She is a member of the "Erfurt Netcode" (www.erfurter-netcode.de), which supports quality online websites for children.
