Findings

• The internet is seen by young people as a way of life (it is a technology that is naturally part of their lives and is not considered new or special). • Using the internet is often associated with communication (to some extent it replaces telephone communication, which is seen as more expensive). • The internet is associated with ‘freedom’ (lack of control, no limits). • Parental control occurs in rare cases and only in terms of use (the respondents had not heard of parental control software installed and lacked any computer skills). Parental control is related to placing a computer connected to the internet in a common room (not in the teen’s room) and moving the computer to a common room is sometimes seen as a sign of ‘punishment’. • In relation to school: parents widely noted the internet to be valuable to children in their school (this explains the high penetration rate, even in low-income households).
