Findings

• The reception of music videos is closely linked to the lifeworld of the interviewed people. Today they use almost exclusively YouTube and Facebook. Mentioned reasons are: to save time, pre-filtered content by friends and peers, personal references, and freedom of choice. The interviewees used the opportunity to like and to share videos. • Mentioned reasons are: to share one’s mood, identification, information for friends and peers, hidden messages, and support for artists. Mentioned in a positive way overall is the opportunity to compose a programme with respect to one’s own needs. It is highlighted in a critical way that a number of videos are removed from YouTube and Facebook due to several reasons. Mentioned are: aspects of digital rights management (DRM, especially GEMA in Germany) and ‘censorship’ (e.g. sexual content in music videos).
