• Some risk behaviours have been identified by children: communication by email and social networking sites with strangers; lack of awareness of potential dangers; ‘befriending’ strangers on SNSs (with 66% reporting that they accept strangers on their list of friends); importing lists of contacts from their friends in order to have more ‘friends’ on their lists; using a webcam; sending personal data; meeting new people offline; receiving ‘job offers’.
The survey highlighted the difference between more or less experienced young, and foreign internet users. It was found that:
a) more inexperienced internet or mobile phone users do not understand the significance of chatting to adult strangers online or discussing sex in general;
b) inexperienced internet users are more concerned about their privacy than those who use the internet more;
c) inexperienced internet users are only aware of a limited number of internet functions, and unable to fully describe what they do on the internet due to a lack of understanding of the relevant technical language (names of social networks, search engines, websites).
