Findings

• 39% of the parents think that they need to be more involved in the internet use of their children. • 93% restrict internet use by passing of personal information (name, address, phone number), 91% talk with children about what they are doing on the internet, and 90% explain to the children why some websites are good or bad. • How much parents regulate the children’s internet use depends on the socioeconomic status of the household and parents, the parent’s familiarity with the internet, the age of the children and the parent’s language affiliations. • Many parents don’t regulate certain areas of their children’s internet use: 52% of the parents never control what internet page their child uses, 47% of the parents never encouraged their children to learn things on the internet or to try things online. 31% of the parents never talked to the children about what they could do if they felt bothered after using the internet. • In future, the parents require information on safe internet use mainly from school, media, family and friends.
