Young Generation Media Workers in Party Organ Newsroom: Negotiation and Conflicts inside Contemporary Chinese Media

This project provides an inside perspective of the negotiation between young generation media workers and existing journalistic field in Chinese party organ news media newsroom. Unlike discussing the political economy of Chinese media, this project is expected to figure out the negotiation between young media workers' agency and the existing journalistic structure in the digital era from a Bourdieusian perspective by employing ethnographic study and in-depth interview.

Chinese media, especially the party organ news media are always believed being controlled restrictedly by the Communist Party of China. However, with the introduction of Anglo-American journalistic education, market-oriented media reform, and the application of internet and social media in daily news production process, media workers, especially young media workers in Chinese party organ news media have different understandings of China and world, which may lead to a potential political transformation in China.

The ethnography and in-depth interview of media workers' daily routine can reflect how media workers work, and how their agency conflicts and negotiates with the existing journalistic structure. More importantly, this project can examine whether the application of internet, especially social media platforms can change the existing structure or not.
