International Development in the Media

development_coverage24th June 2010

It was standing room only at the debate on media and development chaired by Polis Director Charlie Beckett.

How can a balanced view of development be projected when poor countries are often only deemed newsworthy in times of natural disaster or war? How can journalists avoid the 'white man to the rescue' stereotype? These were some of the questions debated on June 24th at the LSE.

Panelists included Jo Confino, Executive Editor, Guardian and Chairman, Guardian Sustainable Business; Jen Corlew, Head of Media, Oxfam GB; Jonathan Miller, Foreign Affairs Correspondent, Channel 4; Solomon Mugera, Head of BBC Swahili; and Mark Wilson, Executive Director, Panos.

The event was a partnership with the Institute of Development Studies.
