In brief

In Germany, current data will be available in summer 2019. In addition to the topics from the first data collection in 2010, questions will also be asked about how children use digital media to participate in society. The survey is made possible by support from UNICEF, the Telekom Foundation, the Media Education Research Network Southwest (Medienpädagogischer Forschungsverbund Südwest) and the Media Authority in Lower Saxony (NLM). The results will be published in autumn 2019.

Please note that the results and tools refer to the first survey. These will be updated as the new findings are published.

Highlights

  • The findings on Germany have informed the policy development, guidance and the initiatives of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the German regulatory authorities and the regional states.
  • EU Kids Online findings have been published in the most relevant German journals for media use (“Media Perspektiven”), for child and youth protection (“Kinder- und Jugendschutz in Wissenschaft und Praxis”), for political education (“Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte”), and for research on children and youth (“Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung”).
  • Based on EU Kids Online evidence and other work on youth protection, media literacy, and media education, the German team conducted a two-year project on youth protection and media education that has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry. The project included a) a qualitative study on mobile use of children and adolescents b) qualitative research on the use of technical filter programs in families, b) the organisation of the European expert conference “Net Children 2020” in April 2015, and c) a monitoring of national and international developments in the field.
