About me

Heloise Buarque de Almeida is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Sao Paulo

While at the LSE she will be pursuing her research project ‘Meanings of Sexual Violence: Media and the Public Dispute over the Construction of Rights’. The project aims to understand the public construction of categories of sexual and gender violence, categories that are in process of transformation or constitution. Specifically, it reflects on the demand for recognition of relatively new notions of rape and sexual harassment that have been in formation or transformation in the public arena in recent years in Brazil, with an emphasis on the media, both hegemonic commercial media and that which defines itself as independent or even activist, in their interaction with social movements and the judicial system.

During her time at LSE Dr Buarque will be working with Shani Orgad and Nick Couldry
