Abdulla Al-Othman

Currently teaches: MA100

Abdullah has been teaching MA100 for the past three years. Prior to joining the Department, he was associate adjunct professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at the American University of Kuwait, and associate adjunct professor of Finance and Operations Research at the Maastricht Business School of Kuwait. Abdullah's current areas of research involve mathematical models for corporate disclosure. Besides teaching and mathematics, Abdullah enjoys classical music, the opera, chess, Victorian literature, running, riding and scuba diving.

Aistis Atminas

Currently teaches: MA208 and MA212

Aistis has been teaching at LSE since September 2016. He is a class teacher for the undergraduate courses Further Mathematical Methods MA212 and Optimization Theory MA208. Prior to joining LSE, he taught several undergraduate modules at Nottingham Trent University and worked as a teaching assistant and an undergraduate supervisor at University of Warwick. Aistis graduated from his PhD in Mathematics in 2015 at University of Warwick. His research interests lie in graph theory.

Sally Barton

Currently teaches: MA103, MA107 and MA212

Sally studied mathematics at Nottingham University where she completed a PhD in Mathematical Logic. She was a tutor for the Open University and worked for London Transport (attending LSE transport seminars) before a move to Africa for 10 years. Since her return she has worked for a variety of HE and FE institutions supporting mathematics, engineering and foundation students with mathematics and study skills. She speaks conversational French and Swahili. She is very interested in transition issues and e-assessment.

Gokhan Ciflikli

Currently teaches: MA300

Gokhan is a PhD candidate in the International Relations Department, investigating the structural determinants of armed conflict longevity for his dissertation project. He holds a MSSc in Peace and Conflict Studies from Uppsala University, Sweden. He employs formal modelling, quantitative methods, and machine learning for his research. He has been teaching game theory and quantitative methods at LSE since 2015, including courses provided by the departments of Government, Mathematics, and Management. He is an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK.

Nicholas Cron

Currently teaches: MA103 and MA203

Nicholas has been teaching for the Mathematics Department since 2005, taking classes in MA103, MA203, MA209 and MA317. He is also a lecturer in the Statistics Department for courses ST108 and ST201. In addition, he lectures at Birkbeck in Modern Statistical Methods and Mathematical Methods of Operational Research. He has worked as a Consultant for the Further Educational Funding Council, London Underground, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the Department of Health. His interests include chess, classical music, current affairs, cricket, walking, psychology, philosophy, literature and fine wines.

Sam Fendrich

Sam gained his doctorate at LSE in 1987. His main interest is the foundations and philosophy of mathematics. He has wide experience of teaching in diverse settings and has been a GTA in the Mathematics Department for the past ten years.

Anastasia Kakou

Currently teaches: MA107

Anastasia first taught at LSE during her studies, and after a long and successful career in investment banking, returned in 2012 as a Guest Teacher in the Mathematics and Statistics departments. She is teaching mainly first-year undergraduate courses.

Siri Kouletsis

Currently teaches: MA100 and MA107

Siri came to LSE as a Guest Teacher in 2016. She studied mathematics at Birkbeck College where she was awarded the Undergraduate Mehdi Prize in mathematics and a Winton Capital scholarship for a 4-year funded PhD in abstract algebra. Her research interests lie in the symmetric group and the geometric foundations of group theory. Originally, Siri started as a dancer, having trained at the Norwegian National Ballet School. She has worked in management across different countries and cultures and speaks several languages fluently. She still enjoys taking dance classes and attending performances of the Royal Ballet. She is also a former athlete having been a member of the Norwegian junior national teams in rowing and rhythmic gymnastics.

Amal Merhi

Currently teaches: MA100

Amal graduated with a PhD in Mathematics from King's College, London. She subsequently worked as a financial engineer in the city and as a medical statistician at the University of Oxford. She has been teaching classes in Maths since 2014.

Cheng Qian

Currently teaches: MA100

Cheng graduated from LSE with a Masters degree and now is a second year PhD student in the Time Series and Statistical Learning group in the Department of Statistics. His research interests are financial econometrics, high-dimension statistics and machine learning. He is now working on two projects about spatial weight matrix estimation (including least square estimator and maximum likelihood estimator) and their inference. Besides MA100, he also teaches ST102 classes and ST425 workshops, as he really enjoys teaching and the time he spend with his students.

Yan Qu

Yan is a second-year PhD student in the Department of Statistics, research interests are mainly related to exact simulations of continuous stochastic processes and their applications in finance. She holds a BSc in Mathematics from Imperial College and a MSc in Financial Mathematics from LSE Department of Mathematics. She is teaching MA212 in the Maths Department as well as ST102 in the Statistics Department this year

Denis Schelling

Currently teaches: MA100

Denis holds an MSc in Applied Mathematics from EPFL and is now in his second year of PhD in the Department of Mathematics at LSE. He is currently working on several research projects in financial mathematics involving quadratic hedging and trading in markets with transaction costs. He has also been teaching MA100 classes at LSE since his first year. Before starting his studies at LSE, he has worked at FINMA, the Swiss financial regulatory authority in Zurich and at KPMG in Geneva.

Tony Whelan

Currently teaches: MA103, MA210 and MA211

Tony has taught classes in Maths since 1999, currently MA103, MA210 and MA211 and previously MA107, MA203, MA208 and MA209.  He also lectured on ST107 in Statistics, and taught classes in Statistics and in Management Sciences.  He has been awarded several teaching prizes, and worked for twelve years as the maths/stats study support advisor in LSE’s Teaching & Learning Centre. His research interests are in non-commutative ring theory, and before LSE he worked in the Civil Service and in local government finance.  He lives in London
(with family all within walking distance), and is also a grass-roots political activist, e.g. against racism

Michael Yiasemides

Currently teaches: MA100

Michael completed his MMath integrated masters degree at Oxford University in June 2015. He then spent a year teaching mathematics classes at LSE and King's College London, before starting his PhD in Number Theory at Exeter University in September 2016. He continues to teach 3 MA100 Mathematical Methods classes at LSE. In addition to mathematics, Michael is involved in activism involving animal rights, the environment, and social equality. He volunteers with the Born Free Foundation's Activate team, as well as with the UKMT's Senior Mentoring Scheme. In the future, Michael plans to continue in academia and become a lecturer, as well as continuing with activism.

Christine Yuen

Currently teaches: MA100

Christine is a first year PhD student in the Time Series and Statistical Learning group in the Department of Statistics. She was a general course student at LSE. She also holds an MSc in Statistics from LSE's Department of Statistics. She has been teaching at LSE since 2016 and is currently teaching MA100 (Mathematical Methods) and ST102 (Elementary Statistical Theory). Her research interests are in model selection.

Xiaolin Zhu

Currently teaches: MA100

Xiaolin is just going into the second year of a PhD in the Department of Statistics, researching on the pricing of American-style Parisian option with barriers. She also holds an MSc in Financial Mathematics from LSE Department of Mathematics. She has been teaching at LSE since 2015, teaching a range of courses in the Math Department as well as Stats Department. In June 2016, she completed the study for the PGCertHE and achieved the status of Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.

George Zouros

Currently teaches: MA100, MA107 and MA301

George received his PhD in Philosophy of Science in 2007 from LSE, and completed a PGCE in Mathematics at Kings College in 2009. He previously earned a BSc in Physics (QMC London 1992) and an MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces (Imperial College, 1993). George has been teaching at LSE since 1999. He has been a guest lecturer lecturing in Quantitative Methods, Operational Research, Logic and Philosophy of Science. He also taught various subjects (including Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Management, Philosophy and LSE100) at the School since 1999 both at graduate and undergraduate levels.
