Research on the role of ICTs in tackling complex societal challenges has acquired a paramount position in the Information Systems domain. Uptake of themes in ICT for Development (ICT4D) is motivated by practical concerns, chiefly the increasing adoption of digital technologies in anti-poverty policy and emergency response, but also by the distinctive contribution made by this stream of research to IS theory at large. In this context, reflection is needed on the present and future of ICT4D research, in relation to the IS domain to which it contributes.
In this session, the role of ICT4D in IS research, as well as its position “at the interface” between theory and praxis, will be explored through the voices & research stories of three PhD alumni. The session will be a round table aimed at mapping the field, reflect on our position within it, and devise optimal ways to build on synergies between it and other domains of expertise. In doing so, the interdisciplinary experience of the panellists will be paramount: so will be, at the same time, the proactive participation of current & future researchers in this dynamic domain.
