IS in Management: A panel discussion

Friday 30th January 2015, 2 - 4pm, NAB 1.17

Panel:

  • Michael Barzelay is Professor of Public Management and Head of the Department of Management at LSE.
  • Chrisanthi Avgerou is Professor of Information Systems at LSE.
  • Carsten Sørensen is Associate Professor (Reader) of Information Systems and Innovation at LSE.

As the LSE's Information Systems and Innovation Group (ISIG) is becoming more closely aligned with the Department of Management, we want to discuss the role of Information Systems in Management, the relevance of the two fields for each other, and the (perceived?) differences in epistemologies and methods.

Information Systems at the LSE started out as an applied science (see Frank Land's work with LEO), but has developed a strong social-science based profile based on a constructivist epistemology and interpretivist analysis of qualitative data. In contrast, we tend to see management research as positivist and based on quantitative data. In the interest of multi-method research, there is a strong case for both sides to talk to each other (if the difference is indeed this clear cut). Moreover, the growing relevance of Information Systems in every part of life, and the increasing abundance of quantitative data, may necessitate this even more.
