Information Systems in Developing Countries: Exploring the Future

Thursday 15th May 2014, 2.00 - 4.00pm, Graham Wallas Room (OLD, 5.24)

Panel

Prof Chrisanthi Avgerou is Professor in Information Systems at the London School of Economics and Political Science

Prof Richard Heeks is Professor of Development Informatics at the Institute for Development Policy and Management, University of Manchester

Dr Kathy McGrath is Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Brunel University.

Over the last decades, the domain of Information Systems in Developing Countries (ISDC) has focused on technologies carrying significant transformations in developing nations. On the one hand, the potential of ICTs as enablers of development, and of the key dimensions leading to it, has been widely observed and examined. On the other hand, recounts reporting ICTs as factually unable to deliver the expected development outcomes have seriously problematized the initial deterministic narrative: the present historical phase, approaching the target date of the Millennium Development Goals, is one in which questions on the future of ISDC are of deep relevance to both theory and practice.

In this session, we will focus on the crucial task of exploring the future of ISDC, in the light of the most recent developments of the discipline. In doing so, we will focus on crucial questions on the theoretical directions that the discipline is taking, and on the notions, events and concepts that will inform its further development.
