Causal explanations, the way forward

Thursday 13th February 2014, 4.15pm - 5.45pm, Vera Anstey Room, Old Building

Panel

Prof. Chrisanthi Avgerou, Information Systems Group, Department of Management, LSE

Prof. Lynne Markus, Information and Process Management, Bentley University

Prof. Frantz Rowe,Economics and Management Institute, Université de Nantes

Prof. Jochen Runde, Judge Business School, University of Cambridge

If we are to review the state of the field, Avgerou (2013) argues that the IS discipline has refrained from deeply and explicitly engaging in causal explanations. This happened despite scholars indicated the way by distinguishing between different models of causality and indicated how to form, test and evaluate causal explanations (e.g. Markus and Robey 1988; Runde 1998).

We would like to have the opportunity to review our toolkits. One might ask several questions in this regard. For instance, how should researchers set out for the field, with this agenda in mind? What would be the most appropriate methods, and why are current methodologies often not appropriate?

In addition, we need to articulate our considerations while looking at the future challenges of the discipline. In front of the sudden expansion of the application domain for IS research, with the unprecedented diffusion of IS phenomena across all social contexts, what do the Internet and the broader digital ecosystem represent for this research agenda?

We have invited four authorities from the fields of organization science, economics and information systems to shed light on the topic in a panel discussion.
