Professor Lord Nicholas Stern

IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government, director of the India Observatory, chairman of the Asia Research Centre and chairman of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment

Prior to my return to LSE in June 2007, I was adviser to the UK Government on the economics of climate change and development, head of the Government Economic Service (2003-07), 2nd Permanent Secretary to HM Treasury (2003-05) and director of Policy and Research for the prime minister's Commission for Africa (2004-05). I have also acted as chief economist of the World Bank (2000-03) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (1994-99). Prior to 1994 I was mostly in academic life, including at LSE, where I held the Sir John Hicks Chair in Economics. I have taught and researched at many places including Oxford and Warwick Universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, École Polytechnique in Paris, the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore and Delhi and the People's University of China in Beijing. I will chair the new Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, established at LSE in 2008. The Institute will bring together international expertise on economics, finance, geography, the environment, international development and political economy to establish a world leading centre for policy relevant research and training in climate change and the environment. As scientists continue to play their role in analysing the causes and effects of climate change, it is crucial that social scientists take a lead in the building of policy. The Institute will act as an umbrella body for LSE's contribution to climate change and environment, acting as a policy focused space for a network of academics, business leaders, campaigners, policy makers, media, general public and other interested groups.
