How to get to Sidney Webb House

The residence is situated between Great Dover Street and Tabard Street, next to a larger residence belonging to King's College. The main entrance is accessible by steps from Great Dover Street or by car from Tabard Street.

The information below should help you get here regardless of where you're coming from or how you are travelling.

London airports

From Gatwick Airport – take the Bedford train to London Bridge station. London Bridge is the second stop (after East Croydon). This takes just 25 minutes. The Gatwick Express takes 30 minutes and runs every 15 minutes to Victoria, which is further away from SWH and does cost more. 

From Heathrow Airport – the Piccadilly Line underground service offers a direct link from Heathrow’s five terminals. It can take up to an hour but a taxi would not necessarily be quicker and it would be a lot more expensive. The Heathrow Express takes just 15 minutes to Paddington, where you would then need to change onto the tube network for a further 40 minues.

From London City Airport – easy to get from this airport as it is situated only 10 miles from the West End, 6 miles from the City and 3 miles from Canary Wharf. Flights from various European destinations operate to London City Airport.

From London Luton Airport – First Capital Connect (FCC) run direct trains every 30 minutes to London Bridge from Luton airport – the journey time is about 50 minutes

From London Stansted Airport  – Stansted Express Rail Service runs every 30 minutes to Liverpool Street Station and takes around 45 minutes.

By rail and tube

From Euston or King's Cross, get on The Northern Line (black) southbound via Bank (There are two lines of the Northern Line, one goes via Charing Cross, you want the one that goes via Bank). Get off at Borough station (one south of London Bridge) and follow the instructions below. Journey time: approx 25 mins.

From Liverpool Street, get on the Central Line (red) westbound for one stop. At Bank, change onto the Northern Line (black) southbound, or get the 35 or 133 number bus from outside the stations main entrance. Get off at Borough station (one south of London Bridge) and follow the instructions below. Journey time: approx 15 mins.

From Paddington, get on the Bakerloo Line (brown) southbound to Elephant & Castle. Change here onto the Northern line (black) northbound for one stop. Get off at Borough station and follow the instructions below. Journey time: approx 40 mins.

From Victoria, get on the Victoria Line (blue) southbound for three stops. At Stockwell, change onto the Northern Line (black) northbound via Bank (There are two lines of the Northern Line, one goes via Charing Cross, you want the one that goes via Bank). Get off at Borough station and follow the instructions below. Journey time: approx 20 mins. 

From Waterloo, get on the Bakerloo Line (brown) southbound to Elephant & Castle. Change here onto the Northern line (black) northbound for one stop. Get off at Borough station and follow the instructions below. Journey time: approx 15 mins.

From London Bridge, either take the Northern line (black) southbound for one stop. Get off at Borough station and follow the instructions below, or print off the streetmap below and walk (which is probably quicker).

From Borough station, cross the road at the crossing, turn left and stay on the pavement so you will be walking down Great Dover Street. Keep walking (past The Dover Castle) and when you get to The Roebuck Pub, cross the road at the zebra crossing. Keep walking past the Kings residence and the next building (the second of two similar looking buildings) is Sidney Webb House. Go down the steps by the blue railings and buzz the intercom to get into reception.

By taxi

If you have got too much luggage to carry easily on and off trains or buses then you might consider taking a taxi. We recommend using a black cab. For Sidney Webb House, ask for 'Great Dover Street, just before Law Street (and CostCutter )'.

By car

We recommend using a route planner such as AA route planner|, RAC route planner|Green Flag route planner| or any other.

 

Put Great Dover Street as your destination. Then

 

Entering Great Dover Street from the north, via Borough High Street or Marshalsea Road (next to Borough Tube station)  

  • Proceed down Great Dover Street until you pass the traffic lights by the Roebuck pub. 
  • Take the next left by the 'CostCutter' shop and then left again into Tabard Street.  
  • Sidney Webb House is the building on your left. Pull in at the first entrance for unloading. 

Entering Great Dover Street from the south, via the Bricklayers Arms junction.  

  • Proceed up Great Dover Street a little way until you see on your right, the Black Horse pub and the CostCutter shop.
  • Turn right into the road between these and then take the next left into Tabard Street.
  • Sidney Webb House is the building on your left. Pull in at the first entrance for unloading.

 

Travel options to and from LSE

By bus

Travel time approximately 35 minutes. There are several bus routes:

1. Bricklayer’s Arms to Aldwych
Buses 1, 168, 172 and 188 - direct

2. Great Dover Street to Aldwych
Bus 21 – change at Monument to bus 15 or 521

By bicyle

Cycling to and from LSE and Great Dover Street take approximately 15 minutes.

By Tube

Travel time approximately 35 minutes. There are several tube lines and routes:

1. Borough to Holborn
Northern line to Bank, Central line to Holborn.

2. Borough to Charing Cross
Northern line to Elephant and Castle, Bakerloo line to Charing Cross.

3. Borough to Temple
Northern line to Bank, walk to Monument station, District or Circle line to Temple.

By taxi

A pre-booked minicab or London black cab will cost between £10 and £15, depending on time of day.

By Riverboat

Travel time approximately 50 minutes including walking time to and from the pier on either side of the journey.

London Bridge Pier to either Blackfriars Pier or Embankment Pier. 

On foot

Walking to LSE will take around 40 minutes.  

Route from Sidney Webb House to LSE

  • As you leave Sidney Webb House reception, turn left and up the steps onto Great Dover Street.
  • Turn right and walk the length of Great Dover Street, crossing to the other side of the road where most convenient.
  • At the end of the road bear left and cross immediately towards Borough Tube station.
  • Pass the station into Marshalsea Road and continue on the left side until the end.
  • Cross Southwark Bridge Road ahead of you and turn right towards Southwark Bridge.
  • Pass underneath the railway bridge and at the traffic lights turn left into Southwark Street.
  • Almost immediately take the crossing to the other side of the road and after 30 yards take the first road right into Great Guildford Street, past the Rosie Tate cafe.
  • Cross Great Guildford Street and pass Zoar Street on the left, turning right past Bankside House into Sumner Street.
  • Take the first turn to the right along Holland Street to the side of the Tate Modern gallery.
  • At the end of Holland Street cross the the small piazza heading towards the railway bridge. This looks as if it might be a dead end but there are two paths on your right which take you to the riverside walk. Take either one.
  • At the river, turn left and proceed under railway bridge that crosses the river.
  • Keep going and you will find yourself passing under a second bridge, Blackfriars.
  • Immediately after the bridge, climb the stairs on your left side and cross the river.
  • At the other end, you will pass some steps on your left (don't take these) and then follow the path round to the left as it goes down to the Embankment.
  • Walk along the Embankment (this follows the river) for about 10 minutes, keeping an eye out on the right, for a crossing and an underground station, Temple.
  • Take this crossing, and pass Temple station. Climb the steps in front of you to reach Temple Place, cross this street and continue walking up the hill along the right hand side of Arundel Street.
  • When you reach the top, cross the Strand (ahead of you) towards the Gladstone memorial statue and then turn immediately left and cross to the 'island' between the church (St Clement Danes) and Australia House. Turn right.
  • At the end of the 'island' is a crossing to the Aldwych. Turn left and you will pass a post-office on your right.
  • The next right, before the Nat West bank, is Houghton Street, home of the School
  • At the main entrance you can get a map showing the School buildings and the links between them.

Route back from LSE to Sidney Webb House

  • Leave Houghton Street past the Garrick, turning left into the Aldwych
  • Take the first crossing on your right onto the 'island between Australia House and St Clement Danes Church.
  • Cross the next road, the Strand, straight ahead of you and go down the hill on Arundel Street.
  • At the end of Arundel Street cross Temple Place and walk down a few steps to pass by Temple underground station
  • Cross the Embankment and turn left along to river.
  • In about 5 minutes on your right you should see Blackfriars Bridge. Cross the river on this bridge.
  • At the end of the bridge there is a pub called Doggets. By the pub there are steps down to the walkway by the river. Go down these steps and pass under the bridge.
  • Carry on under the next bridge and then turn immediately right. At the end of this path you join Hopton Street.
  • Turn left cross the small piazza by the big orange tower. Pass the tower into Holland Street which takes you past the Tate Modern gallery.
  • Walk to the end of Holland Street and turn to the left along Sumner Street.
  • Pass Bankside House (about 70m further along on the right side) and turn right into Great Guildford Street.
  • Pass the Rosie Tate cafe and turn left into Southwark Street.
  • Just before Southwark Bridge Road, cross Southwark Street and turn right into Southwark Bridge Road (away from the bridge) and pass under the railway bridge.
  • As the road bears to the right, cross into Marshalsea Road and follow this on the right hand side until you reach Borough tube station.
  • At Borough, cross the road ahead of you (Borough High Street) and then turn left and almost immediately right into Great Dover Street.
  • Follow Great Dover Street, crossing to the left where convenient. Pass the Roebuck pub on the right and the Kings College residence on your left.
  • Take the steps down to the main entrance of Sidney Webb House, on the left (if you get to CostCutter then you've gone too far).
