Given LSE’s incredibly diverse international community, the Language Centre forms an important part of the campus experience for our globally-minded students. The Language Centre offers tutoring in 12 different languages from beginner to advanced level.
Students can learn any of these 12 languages as an extra-curricular activity: Arabic, Catalan, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
Undergraduate students can also learn French, German, Spanish, Russian or Mandarin as part of their degree, with credits contributing to their final degree grade.
The Language Centre also offers English for Academic Purposes programmes, where international students can improve their English language skills with particular emphasis on studying and writing for their programme.
“I have really benefited from the Language Centre. I loved the breadth of the courses there and the capacity of the teachers to link themes of general and academic interest; the feeling of personal improvement I got at the end of the year by being admitted to the next course and the idea that your marks are not only determined by your language proficiency but also by your eagerness to work and participate in class.” Giovanni Graglia, BA History
“The Language Centre at LSE is really fantastic. In the course of my degree, I've managed to go from no knowledge of Russian to reaching the final certificate course as well as refresh my German. This year I'm about to start learning Arabic.” Stephen Almond, BSc Business Mathematics and Statistics
“I have benefited particularly from the Language Centre which offers preparatory courses to enhance your English language. As a non-native English speaker, I found this useful as it helped develop my ability to write well for academic purposes.” Boipelo Tshwene, MSc Environment and Development
