The Library is situated at 10 Portugal Street, London, WC2A 2HD.

The Library is open 24hrs to LSE staff and students only, during lent and summer terms. All external users must leave the Library at midnight. There are regular security checks throughout the night and you will be escorted to the exit if you are unable to produce and LSE ID.|

We welcome all visitors who need to use our collections for their research although there are restrictions during our exam period. Please be aware that the Library is the worlds largest Social Science research library and as such does not hold titles suitable for study below undergraduate level. The exact procedure may vary depending on which category of visitor you fall into so, to apply online and find out what you will need to bring with you, please continue to our main admissions pages|

Can I have a pass for the day?

Access can be provided for one day only but all individuals who wish to gain access to the Library have to apply according to their user category and provide the correct ID and/or proof of address.

How long will it take to process my application?

Please complete the self registration form a few days before your visit the Library. On your arrival visit the Membership desk, it will take just a few minutes to finish your application and receive your library pass. If we are unable to provide you with a card, a temporary pass will be provided. 

Can I use my own university ID card to access the Library?

No, all users must be members of the Library and must complete the self registration form. Access will be denied if you are unable to provide the correct ID and proof of address

Do I need to bring a photo for my Library card?

No, you do not need to bring a photo, we have a web cam to digitally store your image.

What ID and proof of address do you accept?

  • Passports
  • National ID Cards
  • UK College and University ID
  • Bank Credit or Debit Card
  • Staff ID Card
  • ID cards from private colleges
  • Photo oyster cards 

I do not have a bank account or pay utility bills. What should I do?

Once registered please come to the reception desk and speak to a member of the Membership team. Access is only allowed once the correct documentation has been provided.
