When you know the publication details
To find both printed and electronic issues of a particular journal you can search for the title of the journal in the Library catalogue. To access the electronic format follow the "Click here for full text" link in the catalogue record that has "Electronic resource" as it's sub-title. The printed version will have a classmark on the catalogue record so you can locate it in the building.
Key Latin American Journals
Below are some suggestions for journals dealing with Latin America. The Library holds many more which can be explored via the Library catalogue.
The Bulletin of Latin American research produced by the Society for Latin American Studies (Great Britain). The Library has electronic access to all the volumes from 1981 to the present.
The CEPAL review produced by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. The Library has access to all items from 1993 to the present but also holds the printed version from 1976 to the present.
The Hispanic American historical review (HAHR) produced by the American Historical Association. The Libray has electronic access from 1918 to the present.
The Journal of Latin American studies published by Cambridge University Press. The Library has electronic access from 1969 to the present.
The Journal of Latin American geography produced by the Conference of Latin American Geographers and it's ealier title Yearbook (Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers) The Library has electronic access 2002 to the present.
The Library also holds historical material such as bank reports from the 20th century for most Latin American countries. They can be found on the Library catalogue under the name of the bank.
Finding Journal Articles
The Library catalogue does not contain individual journal articles so you need to use a journal article index to find articles on a topic. Below are specialist area studies resources.
ISI web of Science
Provides free access to a specialist Latin American resource called SciELO. SciELO is supported by the FAPESP (Foundation for Research Support of the State of São Paulo) and the CNPq (National Council of Scientific and Technological Development), in partnership with BIREME (the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information) and covers a range of science and social science subject areas. It indexes articles published since 1997. Many are full text. It can be searched automatically by choosing the All databases option or individually by selecting it from the databases list.
Do remember that the other main social sciences journal indexes like IBSS and SCOPUS also cover Latin America.
Handbook of Latin American Studies
Compiled by Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. It is a bibliography covering politics and economics and the arts in Latin America. it is online from 1995. The Library holds this title in print from 1935 at ZF1408 .Offers annotated references to books and journal articles covering the humanities and social sciences.
Latindex Online Regional Information System for Scholarly Journals from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. Includes listing and links to major scholarly printed and ejournals from the region.
REDIAL (Red Europea de Información y Documentación sobre América Latina), the European Network of Information and Documentation on Latin America is an association formed by 43 libraries and documentation centres in 12 European countries. Its website provides free access to a number of databases and alerting services covering theses, articles, journal and books relating to the region.
HAPI: Hispanic American periodicals index (available for Senate House Library members) Articles about Central and South America, Caribbean basin. Covering the social sciences and humanities from 1970 onwards.
