LGBT collections

The Hall-Carpenter Archives (HCA) consists of around 2000 boxes of material relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activism in the UK. Most of the archives date from after the publication of the Wolfenden Report in 1957.

The material can be accessed at the Library via the Reading Room (see Reading Room access).

You can browse or search the papers on the archives catalogue.

In addition to the holdings at LSE, the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Archive is available to view at the Bishopsgate Institute. The transcripts and tapes of an HCA Oral History Project are held at the British Library Sound Archive.

Other LGBT papers

The Library holds many archives relating to LGBT matters outside the Hall-Carpenter Archives. These include the papers of:

  • Mary McIntosh, 1936-2013, sociologist, mainly relating to gay and feminist politics
  • Michael James, 1941-, gay activist, including documents relating to the London Gay Liberation Front, Body Positive, and the Gay Switchboard

There is also much relevant material among the other archive collections the Library holds (please search the archives catalogue generally for these).
