Elizabeth Chapman

Elizabeth Chapman is a Modern Language graduate of Durham University who trained as a librarian at the then Polytechnic of North London. Her career has been in academic libraries ranging from Further Education where she also qualified to teach adults, to Brunel University, through to Oxford University where she took a year out of libraries to take on a senior university role as Junior Proctor. In Oxford she was a long term member of the University Buildings Committee and as Librarian of the Institute of Economics and Statistics worked closely with Norman Foster architectural practice to develop a new social science library. For the last 6 years in Oxford she was the Taylor Librarian for Modern Languages. She worked on an Oxford College campus in Japan setting up the library in Kobe and was a Professorial Fellow of Somerville College.

From January 2004 she was Deputy Director of Library Services at UCL. There she was responsible for 15 site libraries across north London, many of them in major hospitals providing joint services to the NHS. She also managed the team of specialist subject librarians bringing subject and site library staff into one Academic Support Group. Elizabeth led the library staff in Operational Planning and was active in fundraising and widening participation. She lectured in UCL School Department of Information Studies and is a Research Associate in the CIBER Group.

Elizabeth's published work in librarianship is generally in the areas of collection development and management. A Fellow of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) she has been a member of the Council, and has recently completed a term as a member of the SCONUL executive board (Society of College, National and University Libraries). For this body she co-organised a study tour of Library Buildings in Denmark and Sweden in 2009 and gave a talk to the Swedish Libraries Annual Conference on Library Building Design.
 
Elizabeth is a member of various editorial boards and advisor to publishers and library suppliers. She is currently a member of the International Advisory Board of a major serials supplier, the STM Publishers library relations group and a founder member of the annual Fiesole Retreat which brings together publishers, librarians and suppliers.

Her husband is an LSE alumnus.

Elizabeth has been Director of Library Services at the London School of Economics since 18 January 2010.
