The Asociación Cultural Morrimer, based in Llerena (Badajoz- Spain), will present The eight thousand people column (La columna de los 8000, 66”, 2005, in Spanish with English subtitles). The documentary rescues a forgotten bloody episode that took place in the south-western Spanish province of Badajoz during the first months of the Spanish Civil War.
In September 1936, the last enclaves in southwest Extremadura were on the verge of being conquered by the troops of the insurgent army. Facing this situation, thousands of people tried to avoid terror and death by escaping in an organized way. Some fled because of their political ideas, others simply because they were afraid. They were unaware of the terrible fate that awaited them.
The documentary is a collaborative effort undertaken by more than a hundred members of the Asociación Cultural Morrimer who spent hundreds of hours working on it for well over a year.
After the film, there will be a panel discussion on the issues raised by the film. The speakers will be Professor Paul Preston, Director of the Cañada Blanch Centre|, and Francisco Freire, one of the four directors of the film.
