Students as Producers

The LSE Language Centre Mandarin team has been successfully awarded a Learning Technology and Innovation Grant| on the project in academic year 2014/2015, named Students as Producers.

The proposed initiative aims to introduce student production of video media content in the target language as part of the continuous course assessment in two of the Level 5 Mandarin Chinese courses (Level 5 Fast Track and Level 5 Current Issues respectively). Both course will contain a collaborative learning project which links directly to the course content. Level 5 Fast track students will be required to produce a short film on a global event that concerns them. Level 5 Current Issues students will be required to produce an interview on a current issue topic.

The aims of the project are to: 1. Engage students and language use outside the classroom. 2. Promote creativity and collaborative learning via creating video media project. 3. Maximize the potential of students in terms of applying transferable skills such as researching, presenting, filming and interviewing.

The project will enrich the student learning experience in ways beyond traditional assessment. The students will be given the opportunity to work together on social and current issues that they are interested in yet maintain the use of the target language in a meaningful context. The students will be supported to produce a product that they can share with fellow students and even potentially to their future employers. In terms of teaching, this project also allow the course teacher to focus on the use of a range of language skills which are not usually addressed by traditional course book. In addition, the course teacher can engage students with vocabulary that shows great relevance to the global event. Enabling students to learn to address such issues is both rewarding and challenging for teachers.

The best films made by the students will be awarded with a Prize and a Certificate jointly by the Language Centre and LTI and will be broadcasted via LSE Youtube Channel.
