French Projects

Collaboration with Sciences Po

Sciences Po is one of the LSE’s key international partners. LSE students who are taking French Language & Society courses| have the opportunity to meet Sciences Po students through study trips we organise every year in Paris and Menton, Sciences Po Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Undergraduate College|. Both sets of students particularly enjoy presenting topics and discussing issues related to social sciences in the foreign language they are learning. Faculty members and language teachers have also the opportunity to meet and discuss ongoing issues on E-learning, pedagogy, continual professional development or widening participation.

Digital Storytelling

Thanks to its collaboration with Columbia University Language Resource Center, the French Language team has been able to introduce Digital Storytelling in LN130 French Language and Society 3 (Advanced)|.

A student tells and records a 3-5min personal story illustrated by pictures in the target language. As s/he learns to compose a storyboard (pictures + text) s/he has to grasp the complex relationship between text and pictures. S/he has also the opportunity to improve the quality of the script (accuracy of written text) and her pronunciation/reading skills in the target language as these are corrected and marked by the teacher (Formative assessment). This is very potent way for students to learn and gain confidence in the target language.

French Visual Art and Politics

The French language team has been regularly collaborating with Bordeaux based international visual artist Michel Herreria| since 2003. With Flippant| and Comment dire?| Michel previously created a series of graphic animations for LSE students. These are used as pedagogical props to discuss in French issues in politics in the post-A level LN130 French Language and Society 3 (Advanced)|.

LN330 French Language & Society 5 (Mastery)| students are currently preparing a virtual exhibition of Michel’s animations and LSE art work on Second Life.

LSE Second Life Exhibition: Déjà Vu?

This virtual exhibition will take place on the LSE island in Second Life |from 25 February 2010. To visit the exhibition, simply create your virtual persona and then download and install Second Life on your computer.

As part of the project, Michel Herreria, will be artist in residence at LSE during the week of 22-26 February 2010 and he will be also working closely with LN130 students on political slogans and drawings related to urban space.

Training sessions will also be offered to LSE Language Centre teaching staff and will be delivered by the Learning Support and Administrative| team of the Centre.

E-mentoring for Schools and Universities

E-mentoring enables university students to help and support school students in learning a foreign language. Acting as a mentor, the university student is more of a buddy, a pen pal, a helping hand than a teacher or tutor. The relationship between students and pupils is mainly supported by an E-learning platform such as Moodle or Blackboard where both sets of students can work on specific skills through the use of text and voice boards as well as communicate on topics in the target language or in English.

The scheme has been successfully piloted with inner city schools such as Archbishop Michael Ramsey in Camberwell (South London) and Sarah Bonnell in Stratford (East London). E-mentoring is currently funded by Capital L|, a Routes into Languages consortium of eight universities in London aiming to increase and widen participation in the study of languages.

E-repository with Columbia University NYC

This aim of this E-repository| is for specialist teachers in French as Foreign Language across the world to be able to share teaching and learning materials related to social sciences. It has been created thanks to Columbia University Language Resource Center and it is hosted by the American university.
