Mandarin is taught at LSE as part of our undergraduate degree programmes and as an extra curricular course available to all LSE staff, students, researchers and academics.
The expertise of our experienced teaching team is also used on our Summer Language Programme...a range of short but sweet Summer Language Courses.
A short introductory course for absolute beginners. You will have no knowledge of Mandarin but wish to have an introduction to the basics and learn some language at survival level. This course consists of 18 hours of classes.

A short course for beginners who might have some knowledge about basic Chinese pronunciation. The aim of this course is to refresh your knowledge and lay the foundation more solidly. Focus: The course will focus on: Listening and Speaking skills; basic character reading and writings.

Exit Level: able to verbally communicate in Chinese at a survival level, and learn up to 150 Chinese characters.

Two evenings a week for 4 weeks, 16 hours in total.

An intensive inprover course. You will have some knowledge of Mandarin. In this level, we aim to solidate your speak and introduce basic reading and writing skills in Chinese characters. You can progress from Mandarin for Beginners Intensive to this course.
