Mandarin Summer Language Courses

Mandarin is taught at LSE as part of our undergraduate degree programmes and as an extra curricular course available to all LSE staff, students, researchers and academics.

The expertise of our experienced teaching team is also used on our Summer Language Programme...a range of short but sweet Summer Language Courses.

 

Mandarin for Beginners

A short introductory course for absolute beginners. You will have no knowledge of Mandarin but wish to have an introduction to the basics and learn some language at survival level. This course consists of 18 hours of classes.

 

Mandarin for Beginners: Intensive

A short introductory course for absolute beginners. You will have no knowledge of Mandarin but wish to have an introduction to the basics and learn some language at survival level.

• Entry Level: no prior (or very little knowledge of Mandarin).
• Course Book and Focus: “Mastering Chinese” by Catherine H Xiang-Palgrave Macmillan.
• Focus: The course will focus on: Pronunciation; Listening and Speaking skills on basic daily life topics.
• Exit Level: Survival level with reading and writing skills in Pinyin.
• The course consists of 30 hours of classes.
• The course book will be provided and is included in the cost of this course.

 

Mandarin Improver

A short course for beginners who might have some knowledge about basic Chinese pronunciation. The aim of this course is to refresh your knowledge and lay the foundation more solidly. To make sure this course is the right on for you please check with the Mandarin Co-ordinator Dr Catherine Xiang H.Xiang@lse.ac.uk before registering.

• Course Book: “New Practical Chinese Reader ” by Xun Liu- Beijing Language and Cultural University Press Book 1.
• Focus: The course will focus on: Listening and Speaking skills;  basic character reading and writings.
• Exit Level: able to  verbally communicate in Chinese at a survival level, and learn up to 150 Chinese characters.
• Two evenings a week for 4 weeks, 16 hours in total.
• The course book will be provided and is included in the cost of this course.

 

Mandarin for Improvers: Intensive

An intensive inprover course. You will have some knowledge of Mandarin. In this level, we aim to solidate your speak and introduce basic reading and writing skills in Chinese characters. To make sure this course is the right on for you please check with Mr Fang Pan, F.Pan2@lse.ac.uk the course teacher before registering. You can progress from Mandarin for Beginners Intensive to this course.

• Entry Level: HSK Level 1 or equivalent. Course Book: “New Practical Chinese Reader ” by Xun Liu, Beijing Language and Cultural University Press Book 1.
• Focus: The course will focus on: Listening and Speaking skills on a wider range of daily life topics; Survival reading skills.
• Exit Level: Further knowledge and confidence on daily life topics; prepared for living and studying in China.
• The course consists of 30 hours of classes which take place on each day (Monday-Friday).
• The course book will be provided and is included in the cost of this course.

 

Mandarin Intermediate: Intensive

An intensive intermediate course. You will have some knowledge of Mandarin. To make sure this course is the right on for you please check with Dr Catherine Xiang H.Xiang@lse.ac.uk the course tutor before registering. You can progress from Mandarin for Beginners Intensive to this course.

• Entry Level: HSK Level 2 or equivalent. Course Book: “New Practical Chinese Reader ” by Xun Liu, Beijing Language and Cultural University Press Book 2. Focus:
• The course will focus on: Listening and Speaking skills on a wider range of daily life topics; Survival reading skills.
• Exit Level: Further knowledge and confidence on daily life topics; prepared for living and studying in China.
• The course consists of 30 hours of classes which take place on each day (Monday-Friday).
• The course book will be provided and is included in the cost of this course.

 

Mandarin Upper Intermediate: Intensive

An intensive course for upper-intermediate students. To make sure this course is the right on for you please check with Mr Fang Pan F.Pan2@lse.ac.uk the course teacher before registering. 

• Entry Level: HSK Level 3 or equivalent (learned NPCR Book 2). Course Book: “New Practical Chinese Reader ” by Xun Liu- Beijing Language and Cultural University Press Book 3.
• Focus: The course will focus on: Advanced Listening and Speaking skills; Reading skills.
• Exit Level: Confident speakers on both daily as well as social-cultural topics.
• The course consists of 30 hours of classes.
• The course book will be provided and is included in the cost of this course.

 

Mandarin Advanced: Intensive

An intensive course for advanced students. To make sure this course is the right on for you please check with Dr Lijing Shi L.Shi3@lse.ac.uk the course tutor before registering. 

• Entry Level: HSK Level 4/5 or equivalent (learned NPCR Book 3). Course Book: “New Practical Chinese Reader ” by Xun Liu- Beijing Language and Cultural University Press Book 4.
• Focus: The course will focus on: Advanced Listening and Speaking skills; Reading skills.
• Exit Level: Confident speakers on both daily as well as social-cultural topics; with the ability to be able to read simple articles in Chinese.
• The course consists of 30 hours of classes.
• The course book will be provided and is included in the cost of this course.
