Language Centre Governance

The Language Centre is part of the Academic and Professional Development Division at LSE. The full 'picture' can be seen from the Organisational Chart of the Language Centre.

Management, Committees and Examination Boards

The Centre has three management 'committees'. Co-ordinators, MFL Team and English Team. Individual sections will also have their regular working meetings and will bring proposals to either the MFL or English Team meetings.

The Centre has two examination boards. The Degree Course Examinations sub-board and the Certificate Course Programme Examination sub-board. There are also arrangements in place to review English courses and programmes and to ratify marks where appropriate.

Co-ordinators Meeting

Terms of Reference

  • To discuss Centre activities and direction and to advise the Director of the Centre when drawing up review documents or other major planning proposals
  • To advise the Director on the establishment and revision of any Centre policy documents
  • To advise the Director in relation to new course proposals, external examiner appointments and changes to existing courses

Mode of Operation

  • To meet monthly
  • To be chaired by the Deputy Director

Membership

  • The Deputy Director
  • The Centre Manager
  • All Language Co-ordinators

MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) Team

Terms of Reference

  • To discuss the planning and delivery of all MFL courses and programmes
  • To develop proposals for the establishment and modification of MFL courses and programmes
  • To keep under review all regulations relating to MFL programmes and courses
  • To annually review MFL courses and programmes and propose any appropriate deletions or suspensions of courses.
  • To propose the appointment of new and re-appointment of existing external examiners for all MFL courses and programmes in line with School criteria
  • To consider course and degree results each year
  • To consider external examiner reports each year and act when necessary
  • To consider the scores from the School's internal student survey each year
  • To consider the scores from the Language Centre's user satisfaction survey each year

Mode of Operation

  • To meet bi-weekly during term time
  • To be chaired by an MFL Co-ordinator
  • To invite any other person to attend its meetings to assist in the conduct of its business

  • MFL Language Co-ordinators and Assistant Language Co-ordinators

English Team

Terms of Reference

  • To discuss the planning and delivery of all English courses and programmes and to advise English Co-ordinators as appropriate
