Language Centre Governance

Language Centre Governance The Language Centre is part of the Academic and Professional Development Division at LSE. The full 'picture' can be seen from the Organisational Chart of the Language Centre.|

Management, Committees and Examination Boards

The Centre has three main management 'committees' those of AMEN|, MFL Team| and English Team|. Individual sections will also have their regular working meetings and will bring proposals to either the MFL or English Team meetings.

The Centre has two examination boards. The Degree Course Examinations sub-board and the Certificate Examination sub-board. There are also arrangements in place to review English courses and programmes and to ratify marks where appropriate.

AMEN (Administration, Modern Foreign Languages, English)

Terms of Reference

  • To discuss Centre activities and direction and to advise the Director of the Centre when drawing up review documents or other major planning proposals
  • To advise the Director on the establishment and revision of any Centre policy documents

Mode of Operation

  • To meet as and when required, normally in the run up to major reviews or major strategic planning events

Membership

  • The Director
  • The Centre Manager
  • A representative Language Co-ordinator from the English Team
  • A representative Language Co-ordinator from the MFL Team

MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) Team

Terms of Reference

  • To discuss with the Director and the Centre Manager strategic planning and team developmental issues
  • To discuss the planning and delivery of all MFL courses and programmes and to advise MFL Co-ordinators as appropriate
  • To develop proposals for the establishment and modification of MFL courses and programmes
  • To keep under review all regulations relating to MFL programmes and courses
  • To annually review MFL courses and programmes and consider any appropriate deletions or suspensions of courses.
  • To propose the appointment of new and re-appointment of existing external examiners for all MFL courses and programmes in line with School criteria
  • To approve proposals subject to the approval of the Director of the Language Centre and/or the APRC and/or HR and/or the Finance Division
  • To consider course and degree results each year
  • To consider external examiner reports each year and act when necessary
  • To consider the scores from the School's internal student survey each year
  • To consider the scores from the Language Centre's user satisfaction survey each year

Mode of Operation

  • To normally meet bi-weekly during term time (or more often as required)
  • To normally be Chaired by the Chair of the Language Examination sub boards
  • To report to the Undergraduate Studies Subcommittee in relation to new course proposals, external examiner appointments and changes to existing courses
  • To invite any other person to attend its meetings to assist in the conduct of its business
