About me

Dr Aiko Ikemura Amaral is a Visitng Fellow at LSE’s Latin America and Caribbean Centre for the British Academy ‘Engineering food: infrastructure exclusion and ‘last mile’ delivery in Brazilian favelas’ Project. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Essex and is also a Teaching Associate at the Centre of Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge.

Her research takes on an interdisciplinary approach to address intersectional identities and inequalities in Latin America. She focuses on everyday narratives of social and spatial mobility in order to address the racialisation and urbanisation of indigeneity, as well as its articulation with gender and class. Starting from lively urban street markets, Aiko has conducted ethnographic research in São Paulo (Brazil) and El Alto (Bolivia).

Aiko’s work explores the forms of exclusion and the struggle for inclusion of different groups throughout the region. This translates into a commitment to understand people’s everyday solutions and relations to broader social, spatial, political and economic issues in urban contexts from a critical qualitative approach. In her collaborations, Aiko has furthermore addressed gender and academic research, the interactions between the state and social movements, South-South migration and labour market inequalities.
