The Latin America and Caribbean Centre and the LSE Global South Unit are delighted to be hosting Dr Irene Mia, Global Editorial Director of The Economist Intelligence Unit, to discuss the prominent issue of food sustainability. The world’s food system faces unprecedented challenges as global population increases, resources are scarce, and while hunger and obesity continue to coexist. Tackling these challenges is key to end poverty, as evident in the prominence of food security in six of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Food Sustainability Index, developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit with the BCFN Foundation, provides a rigorous and unique framework to assess food system sustainability across the world, including 34 countries in the 2017 report. This lecture will discuss the challenges faced by food systems through insights provided by the Index, highlight cases of best practice and identify implications for further policy attention.
