Luiza Helena Trajano

Co-founder of the ‘Women of Brazil Group’ and Brazilian businessperson.

Luiza Helena Trajano, co-founder of the Women of Brazil Group and successful Brazilian businessperson, discusses the gender gap in business and education and launches the London branch of the Women of Brazil Group, which aims to tackle the vulnerabilities of female Brazilian immigrants in the country.

Trajano has established herself as one of the most successful business people in Brazil, as the chairwoman of the retailer, Magazine Luiza SA. In 2013, together with other successful business women in Brazil, she co-founded the “Grupo Mulheres do Brasil” (Women of Brazil Group). Its aim is to empower women in entrepreneurship and address other social issues, such as domestic violence and the gender gap in education and the workplace.

The organisation has implemented various initiatives in different countries and is now launching in London. It aims to tackle the vulnerabilities of female Brazilian immigrants, which is the largest group among Latin American immigrants in the United Kingdom (UK). Around a quarter of these women work in low-paid positions and are highly susceptible to violence and sexual trafficking.

Luiza will present insights into how female empowerment initiatives in the business sector can help mitigate some of the challenges faced by women not only in Brazil and the UK, but worldwide. The event will also launch the newly-founded London branch of the Women of Brazil Group and its projects in the UK. The event is supported by LSE’s Latin American and Caribbean Centre (LACC).

Please note this event will be held in Portuguese with simultaneous translation in English.
