FAQ

How do I get in touch?

The office is open every day 9.45 - 5.00, apart from days when the School is closed (at Easter and over Xmas holiday).  

What if I am not sure if counselling is right for me?

Each day we have a drop-in session available at 3.00. You can use this to find out more about what we do and to help you decide what kind of help might be most useful for you. These sessions last for 20 minutes, and cannot be booked in advance.  

How do I register for a counselling appointment?

You will need to fill out a Registration Form, which you can get from the website or office. You can email it or hand it in to the office. See Making an appointment| to download a Form. Regular counselling appointments last 50 minutes.  

How long will I have to wait?

We'll try to contact you with the date for your first appointment within a couple of days of receiving your form. The length of time you have to wait depends on how busy the service is at this time of year, but we will try to offer you an appointment as soon as we can. If you are having serious difficulties and feel you cannot wait long, please let us know about this when you fill in your registration form. 

How many sessions will I have?

Mostly we offer short-term counselling, and many students find that one or two sessions are enough. Some students may have up to six sessions of short-term counselling, and we also have a small number of spaces for longer-term counselling - most of this takes place in our longer term therapy groups.  

What happens in the first meeting?

We'll invite you to tell us about what is worrying you, and look to work out with you what kind of help might be most useful and whether you need any further counselling sessions. The counsellor will be able to advise you about other sources of support if required, and may also refer you to outside agencies where necessary. 

Is it confidential?

Counselling service is confidential, and we will not discuss anything about you outside of the Counselling and Wellbeing Team without your explicit agreement, except in exceptional circumstances. For example, we would have a duty to inform your GP if we were concerned that there was a serious risk of harm to yourself or others. See Confidentiality| for more information. 

I'm not sure if I need counselling, what should I do?

Probably it's easiest to come along for one of the drop-in sessions. You can use this to talk about any issues that you're not sure about, and also ask questions about how best to deal with any difficulties. See here| for more information on drop-in sessions.
